"Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations"
Tue May 03, 2005 at 05:19:15 PM PDT
Drafted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff on March 15 and in accordance with Republican leadership, it appears the Bush Administration would also like to go "nuclear." Literally.
Bombs Away
I don't have much more to say about this. What is there really to say? The very idea of using nuclear weapons is unnerving and barbaric.
Rick Santorum broke Federal Law - Did not reimburse Wal*Mart jet for FL Schiavo Trip
Wed Apr 20, 2005 at 08:29:17 PM PDT
Perhaps this is already old news, but I have received the following e-mail from the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, concerning Rick's recent jaunt in the final days of the Schiavo Nightmare.
It seems Rick(I hear he uses the chat handle PBboner69 - whatever that means) failed to reimburse Wal*Mart for the jet which carried him into the den of shameless hypocrisy and demogoguery which befell Pinellas Park last month, the now infamous political backfire which has reared its ugly full cirlce to engulf Tom Delay, the shifty-eyed, jack-booted Texan who leeched on to that tragedy in a pathetic attempt to appear moral and upstanding in the face of increasing ethical troubles.
Speaking of FDR...
Fri Apr 15, 2005 at 11:24:50 PM PDT
FDR has a special on the History Channel. He's been referenced in the Social Security debate. And we are approaching the 60th anniversary of VE Day. Though he did not live to see the end of that war, FDR led this country for twelve years like no other president. He is a remarkable American and historically important, and we have forgotten him for too long.
So, as a tribute to FDR, here is a portion of his Message to the Congress in 1944, in which he lays out his Second Bill of Rights. He was too ill to leave the White House to appear before Congress to deliver the State of the Union, so he used his fireside chat format to speak to the nation over radio. I highly recommend Cass Sunstein's book, The Second Bill of Rights.
Here lies our legacy. Here lies the unfinished revolution.

Proving once again that he is everywhere
but in Pennsylvania, Rick "Dogs 'n Peanut Butter" Santorum has shown up in Pinellas Park.
Yee-haw...
Perhaps this is an early attempt to out pro-life his opponent next year - Bob Casey, Jr..."I was in Pinellas, Bob. Where were you?"
"Um, serving the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as Auditor General..."
"A commie, huh. I knew it."
"Rick, what the fuck is wrong with you?"
Indeed...nothing good can possibly come from Rick's presence in Pinellas Park.
And for you Floridians...keep your hands on your wallets. Rick really likes to use other people's money to pay for things so he doesn't have to...like his kids' education...
Riddle me this, Kossacks...

I recently caught Rick Warren -
The Purpose Driven Life - on Anderson Cooper. God knows why I was watching 360 in the first place - Anderson is to journalism what Butterbean is to boxing.
OK, I'm kidding - sort of. Coop actually asked Rick a very revealing question about Joseph Campbell's notion of "following your bliss" and spiritual revelation through the inner path.

The Last installment of my Schiavo Diaries. The first four have stood well on their own legs, and I believe this one is just as enjoyable though it is a conclusion to what has snowballed into a 15,000 word essay on the subject. Enjoy.

The Complete Schiavo Diary...not for the Faint of Heart

"All I ask of dying is to go naturally, yes, I want to go naturally...Here come the devil, right behind..."

"Each soul must meet the morning sun, the new, sweet earth, and the Great Silence alone!"
- Charles Alexander Eastman(Ohiyesa), Santee Sioux
MUCH has already been said regarding the Schiavo affair. By now, every home in America has discussed this nonsense ad nasuem, and a dramatic spike in the Living Wills business should soon follow. I've avoided writing about this for several days now, partly to see how things unfolded and partly because of a severe writer's block that developed somewhere between the President's strange press conference and the events of Sunday night, as the House of Representatives debated the Schiavo legislation.

Black members of the Georgia State Senate Democratic Caucus led their colleagues off the Senate floor Friday in protest of a bill that would limit the number of valid forms of identification a person could present on election day. No more birth certificates, no more social security cards...

My Children will go to George W. Bush High and other Strange Vibrations
Sat Mar 05, 2005 at 12:10:20 PM PDT
The vibrations we come across are often strange and confusing. And usually the meaning is not discerned until long after all the horrible rotten damage was done. It is curious how it seems the things we encounter all somehow thread together - I suppose it's Jung's synchronocity.
Whatever it is I'm trying to say at 2:40 AM, it was perhaps utter chance that I happened upon this quote by Pastor Martin Niemoeller in the days following Senator Byrd's comments on the Senate floor:
"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."

Should we push for a vote on Social Security?
Wed Mar 02, 2005 at 11:25:42 PM PDT
At some point, I think the Democrats will be able to start directing the dialogue on this issue. Not only do they have a considerable leg up on the President in the arena of public opinion, things are generally moving their way.
Is there a point when calling for a vote would make strategic sense? Could we deal Bush a huge, glaring defeat and silence those who seek to dismantle Social Security?
It would certainly put a number of Republicans on the spot. In fact, pushing for a vote may open up and reveal a rift amongst the GOP ranks. It wouldn't hurt to bolster the morale of the freshmen Dem leadership either by handing the Republicans a very large legislative defeat.
Just a late night thought.
The Social "In"-Security Calculator

I just found this unique little tool over at MichaelMoore.com -
Social In-Security Calculator. This a great way to found out how much you'll lose as a retiree if Bush is allowed to SS Social Security. Kudos to ever devised this ingenious little device. Try it for yourself. Spread the word.
Thompson suicide expected; HST to be shot from cannon
Thu Feb 24, 2005 at 07:22:08 AM PDT
The word from Hunter's son,
Juan, is that while the timing was unexpected, how the father of Gonzo journalism chose to exit this life was anticipated.
Though it was certainly shocking to many of his fans, an equal number have suspected that this is exactly how the Doctor would exit.
Having lived his life in defiance of excepted social norms, he died in true fashion, before he was destroyed by increasing physical pain. It is hard to imagine Hunter S. Thompson living life on the sidelines when he made his living diving into the center of the scrum. A hospital bed was definitely not his scene. Nor did he come across as a person who could stand for very long watching his physical body degenerate into old age before the whole sad process pissed him off.
Letterman: The kind of wars we should be fighting
Wed Feb 23, 2005 at 09:19:42 PM PDT
In an interview with Michael J. Fox and a discussion of stem cell research and how we use our money to fight disease, David Letterman stated that this[a cure for parkinson's] is the kind of war we should be figting.
While Michael J. Fox reserved a judgement of the war, he did say that figting disease was the kind of "battle" that we could "fight and win."
I'm not sure what this means, maybe nothing. But it does seem a certain candidness is beginning to filter further and further throughout the levels of American society regarding the militarism of the Bush White House.
Perhaps a great nation will finally recognize that it can do more by being a creative force in the world than relying on our base destructive impulses.
